Exploring an under-used natural resource
Oaks are a common and iconic feature in our landscapes, parks and gardens (unless and until threatening diseases take hold) but their fruit, the acorn, is largely overlooked as a food resource in the UK despite huge numbers that can be produced by even a single mature tree.
Inspired by discovering what some other cultures do with acorns, a group of local people in the Transition network have decided to explore and experiment – starting with identifying the location and species of oak trees in the general area and going on to researching, picking, processing and recipe-making.
