The Mari Lwyd is a Welsh wassailing tradition involving a decorated horse's skull carried on a pole. Here are instructions on how to make your own mini version to bring to Llandrindod's community wassail.

You will need:
  • The mini Mari Lwyd template
  • Coloured pens, crayons, glitter etc.
  • Scissors
  • Glue - pritt stick or similar is good
  • Masking tape
  • A stick
  • Coloured ribbons
Instructions:
  1. Print the template onto thick paper or thin card, or alternatively print on paper and stick it onto thin card from e.g. a cereal box.

  2. Cut away the shaded parts and cut around the ears.

  3. Decorate your template as you wish with colours, glitter etc.

  4. Cover the 'glue here' area thoroughly with glue and fold the paper around so that the opposite side meets the fold line.

  5. Fold in the teeth and ears.

  6. Cut a slit where marked on the underside, wide enough for your stick to go through.

  7. Use tape to join together the two point behind the ears, forming a bridge.

  8. Poke the stick up through the underside of the skull and affix the top of it to the bridge behind the ears with more tape.

  9. Attach ribbons with tape.

  10. Done!
