TLT and Friends of Rock Park are jointly setting up a community orchard in Llandrindod. The orchard will be called Llandrindod Pomarium (Pomarium is the Latin word for orchard; there are Roman remains near the orchard site), with the subtitle of Your Community Orchard: Fruit for Free.
Friends of Rock Park have agreed a licence for the site with Powys County Council and will handle the financial/legal side of things. TLT and FORP will jointly take care of the actual running of the project. At present there are three people from both organisations in charge of operations: Hilary Macauley, Joe Botting, and Lucy Muir. We would welcome more people to be involved in the planning and running of the project: please contact any of us if you are interested.
We are planning to get the orchard started by planting some fruit bushes this autumn. The planting will take place at the orchard site at 1 p.m. on Sunday 1 November. Please bring tools for planting if possible (we will also have a limited selection available). The orchard site is at the southern end of Alexandra Playing Fields, Llandrindod (grid reference SO 0568 6069). The site is on the opposite side of the railway line from Montpelier Park (the footbridge across the railway is currently shut so it is not possible to get to the site by that route). From the Rock Park Heritage Centre (where parking is available) walk south (away from the car entrance), go up the hill to the path that runs eastwest under the pine trees, turn left and walk east a short way, then turn right (south) onto the large area of grass (Alexandra Playing Fields). Walk through the playing field: the orchard site is at the south end, next to the footbridge across the railway. Please let us know if you are planning to come, so that we have an idea of how many to expect.
Future plans involve inviting local organisations to sponsor trees in the orchard and having a tree planting/official opening in spring. Further details will be circulated in due course.
